Retellathon TBR

Hey guys. Thank you for checking out my blog. Today’s post is dedicated to my TBR for a read-a-thon that I am very excited to join, the Retellathon.

I adore retellings, I mean the Lunar Chronicle is my favorite series. It’s so amazing. I mean Cinderella, little Red hiding hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White all become friends in space. How can anyone say no?

Retellathon will be July 8th through the 15th and is being hosted by Readbyliv, leabex, wildebookgarden, commonspence, and mikaylatweeting. All have been linked, so go check them out.

Honestly the hardest part of creating this TBR is trying to narrow down all the different books I want to read. My TBR, like every other bookworm I know, is at least a mile long. Longer than I’d be willing to run at least. Anyways, at least the challenges helped to narrow things down… a tiny bit.

Challenge #1

Love at First Sight

A retelling of your favorite fairytale.

I hate trying to figure out what my favorite one is. I love so many fairy tales. But, I decided to go with the one Disney movie, my mom thought I was going to brake the VHS tape of from watching it so much, ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ Besides it’s a great excuse to read ‘A Court of Thrones and Roses,’ by Sarah J Mass. Yes, I know, I’m probably one of like 5 people on Booktube that hasn’t read this series yet. I actually have a box set of the first three. I asked for it for Christmas and then just never read it for one reason or another.

I guess I should still write a short blurb for the fellow 5 people out there that haven’t read it: It’s a 'Beauty and the Beast' re-telling. A woman, Feyre, that ends up getting taken in the realm of fairies. Which to my understanding is more like classic fairies, the kind that are not afraid to mess people up.

Challenge #2.

True Love’s Twist

A queer or gender flipped book

For this challenge I decided to go with ‘A Study in Charlotte,’ by Brittney Carallaro. This book follows the descendants of Sherlock Holmes and Watson in their own shenanigans. Sherlock’s descendant is a woman and her skills of logic and reason apparently don't fall far from the tree.

In truth I haven't read the original Sherlock books. I am a fan of the character in what I have seen of him in different forms of media (aka movies and tv). One of my favorites growing up was actually the Detective Conan anime series. I stopped watching after a while, but it was a fun one that I'd still recommend.

Challenge #3

Faraway Kingdom

Read a book based on a fairytale from your heritage

For this challenge I'm doubling up and using ‘A Study in Charlotte.’ Honestly, I had wanted to find something with Irish roots, however, despite being proud artists and story tellers very little of their original fairy tales remain. Let alone finding retellings of them. Though I identify more as Irish and even rocked red hair for a while, I do have some British blood in me so it still counts. Besides, I don't want to have too many books on my TBR. I want to know I can finish my TBR.

Challenge #4

Under A Spell

Read the group book - ‘The Surface Breaks” by Louise O’Neill

I don't know much about the group book besides that it's a ‘Little Mermaid,’ retelling. I wonder if it'll be on the dark side like the original story. Can't say I'm a big fan of the main character having to choose between killing her love and becoming sea foam. But something a little darker than the Disney version might be fun. Don't get me wrong, I adore the Disney version, it's just good to mix things up.

Challenge #5

Unhappily Ever After

A book with an unhappy ending or told from the villains point of view.

Ah can ‘A Court of Thrones and Roses,’ count? To my understanding it's a little on the mature side. I don't know about the ending though. I don't know if it's unhappy. Honestly I wouldn't want to know if it's happy or sad before jumping into it. And again I'm trying to keep this TBR on the manageable side.

So those are my choices for the retellathon. Let me know if you guys are participating as well and what you all are reading. I always love a good retelling recommendation. Also, let me know if you'd like some blog updates along the way. I'm most active on instagram, so I most likely will be posting about it there. I unfortunately won't be able post my cartoon self on YouTube due to getting ready for the Biannual Bibliothon. I had to give my animator a break on something. But if it's requested I might be able to do something.

Well it's off to my reading tower I go. With my book dragon to protect me from all of the bookish pet peeves (aka hopefully no one will ask me what I'm reading).

Thanks guys. I'll see you later.
